Pneumatic Rubber Fenders are ideal for mooring, ship-to-ship transfers, offshore platforms and floating docks requiring minimal maintenance, so costs are kept down. Hawk Fenders have the merits of high-pressure resistance, high energy absorption low reaction, ageing resistance and saltwater corrosion resistance. They support berthing at angles up to 15 degrees for advanced vessel types such as ULCC, FLNG, FSRU, FSU, FSO, FPSO, LNG and bulk carriers. Pneumatic Rubber Fender Construction
The stringent requirements are designed to operate in ISO 17357:2014 details three major elements of construction: the outer rubber, cord fabric layer and the inner rubber.
The strong abrasion resistance outer rubber is designed to protect the inner rubber and cord fabric layers from damaging external forces. The material has mechanical characterises to withstand the surround operational conditions for which it is designed. The diagram below shows the actual properties as specified in ISO 17357-1:2014. Generally, the natural colour of outer rubber is black, it sometimes can bring black marks to the vessel, therefore to avoid black marks, other colours such as grey, off-white, green, orange and red etc. can also be supplied upon request.
Synthetic cord fabric layers have proven to be the best option for strong, efficient reinforcement for pneumatic rubber fenders. Each layer is coated with a rubber compound on both sides that prevents contact between the layers, reducing friction and wear during bending, compression and stretching. The same compound isolates each thread within the layer. It can improved the ability of the fender to hold pressure, fatigue resistance and endurance life. A schematic of the construction is shown below.
The inner rubber seals pressurised air inside the fender. It is usually constructed of a compound similar to that of an inner tube in a truck or car tyre to ensure a good level of air tightness.
Material Requirement for Pnuematic Rubber Fender
New Requirement for ISO 17357:2014
(1)Diameter of the bead ring or other steel material around the flange opening cannot exceed 0.2 D (D: fender diameter) to make metal parts safe from permanent deformation when it gets over compression near to 80%.
(2) The performance confirmation of prototype fender test shall be done every ten years .
(3) Layer made of synthetic-tyre-cord fabric, which maintains the internal air pressure of the fender. The canvas fabric shall not be used for the high pressure pneumatic floating fender.
